ICONLOOP Begins Building Interchain NFT Game Platform Spera with the ICON Foundation and 2bytes

January 25, 2022, Seoul — ICONLOOP (CEO JH Kim), a leading Korean blockchain company, announced that it has entered a strategic partnership with the ICON Foundation and 2bytes (CEO Youngchul Ham) to build and grow Spera, a blockchain-based interchain NFT game platform, and has opened a teaser site today.

The Spera platform, to be built within the year through the partnership, is an interchain NFT game platform that connects NFTs issued across a range of blockchain networks and platforms in an interoperable form. The name Spera comes from the Latin for "to dream," and doubles as a contraction of "space opera."

Most NFTs currently issued and traded across blockchain platforms have limited use beyond ownership, and even NFTs used in play-to-earn (P2E) games are constrained by being usable only within that particular game and platform.

The Spera platform uses BTP (Blockchain Transmission Protocol), an interchain technology connecting multiple blockchains, to let NFTs from different ecosystems and different blockchains connect to and be used in games on the platform — and plans to support P2E games on that basis.

BTP is a technology from the global interchain project ICON that raises interoperability by connecting different blockchains. Unlike centralized cross-chain approaches, it provides high security and scalability through decentralized connections.

In this partnership, ICONLOOP will support the platform's technical development and construction, drawing on its experience launching a range of blockchain technologies and services, while the ICON Foundation will support interoperability and blockchain ecosystem development using its interchain technology, BTP. 2bytes, a game startup expanding into blockchain services and business, provides localization, QA, global consulting, and other services to some 40 game developers including Pearl Abyss and Kakao Games, and recently established its own game development studio.
