ICONLOOP Launches broof, a Blockchain Certificate Issuance Service

broof (https://broof.io) runs on the ICON public blockchain network and supports the issuance and permanent storage of tamper-proof certificates. Issuing organizations can cut the cost of producing and storing paper documents without having to build a separate database system, while applicants can obtain and look up blockchain certificates simply, anytime and anywhere.

broof is structured so that a certificate is issued when the information entered by an applicant matches the list held by the issuing organization. Once the organization sets an issuance period, a recipient list, and a URL, applicants can visit that URL without any separate sign-up process, enter their name and a password, and receive their certificate. Issuing organizations can edit the certificate template themselves — colors, logo, introductory text and so on — and can also review issuance statistics. Certificate issuance records can be searched through ICON Tracker (https://tracker.icon.foundation), which provides every transaction record on the ICON network.

ICONLOOP launched broof in response to growing social demand for blockchain certificate issuance, with the aim of making certification systems easier and more convenient for both issuing organizations and applicants. The company has previously provided a blockchain certificate issuance service for the appointment of the Seoul Blockchain Governance Group, run by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, and the Seoul Policy Communication Evaluation Group, run by Seoul Citizens Hall. In February, 100 letters of appointment were issued for the Seoul Blockchain Governance Group, and in April, 162 were issued for the Seoul Policy Communication Evaluation Group.

ICONLOOP plans to expand broof's real-world use cases quickly together with certificate issuance partners in education such as POSTECH and Studypie. In January, the online study brokerage platform Studypie issued blockchain certificates of completion to 17 people who finished a course on ICON smart contract development, and in the first half of this year POSTECH will issue blockchain certificates of completion using broof to graduates of its blockchain master's and executive programs for the first time.

As part of that effort, ICONLOOP attended the 2019 POSTECH Blockchain Executive Program completion ceremony, held on May 29 on the 18th floor of the West Wing of the POSCO Center in Seoul, and issued blockchain certificates of completion to the 28 graduates of the program's first cohort. Some 50 people attended the event, including POSTECH President Doh-Yeon Kim, POSTECH Graduate School of Information Technology Dean James Won-Ki Hong, and ICONLOOP CEO JH Kim.

"ICONLOOP is working with government and public institutions on many fronts to bring simple blockchain services into everyday life," said ICONLOOP CEO JH Kim. "With the launch of broof, we hope to create a safer and more trustworthy certification system and reduce the social costs in every field that requires credentials — public administration, education, finance and beyond."

Companies or organizations that wish to issue certificates can sign up on the broof website to get started.
