The ICONLOOP consortium is launching a smart farm big data platform.
The platform was built as part of a program overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) and the Rural Development Administration (RDA) and managed by the Korea Institute of Planning and Evaluation for Technology in Food, Agriculture and Forestry (iPET). Its purpose is to develop a system that can systematically accumulate, manage and share data across the entire Smart Farm Multi-Ministry Package Innovation Technology Development Program - a seven-year effort launched in 2021 - and to establish the basis for operating it. ICONLOOP formed a consortium with CC Media Service, Hohyun FnC, UBN and ArtPQ to develop the smart farm big data platform jointly.
The agricultural population and the amount of farmland keep shrinking, and rising energy and labor costs have put the sustainability of agriculture under serious threat. Against that backdrop, efforts to develop smart farm solutions based on Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies and expand them into the field are spreading worldwide. In Korea, following the first-generation smart farm industrialization technology development program, MAFRA, the RDA and the Ministry of Science and ICT plan to work jointly on the Smart Farm Multi-Ministry Package Innovation Technology Development Program through 2027 in search of new growth drivers and global competitiveness for agriculture and livestock. That is what makes this platform so significant: it is the foundation the program's success will rest on.
In building the platform, ICONLOOP used blockchain technology to make data storage and management both safe and convenient, raising the transparency and reliability of the whole system. It started with the smart farm R&D output management and sharing system component, applying broof, ICONLOOP's blockchain-based certificate service, so that R&D output information is managed and shared via blockchain - preventing forgery or alteration and keeping everything stored safely and conveniently.
For the smart farm researcher community support system component, blockchain technology lets research documents be stored on chain as an immutable digital repository. Document hash values and access history go onto the blockchain, fixing both the time of storage and the contents of the document, which makes permanent preservation without forgery or alteration possible. IDs are also issued to each party on the blockchain network, and using those IDs when documents are stored makes it possible to pin down exactly who stored a document and who looked at it.
It means a great deal to be able to bring our blockchain technology to a program that will be a cornerstone of a sustainable agricultural ecosystem. ICONLOOP will keep working hard so that blockchain technology, DID included, helps build a safer and more convenient world.
