'Disruption' was already a fashionable expression in IT before now. But the various kinds of disruption that appeared over the past year were quite different from what came before. The pandemic set off a seismic shift in the technology field: some approaches and systems stopped, while the adoption of others sped up.
In the recent State of the CIO survey run by CIO.com, technology leaders picked AI and ML as the technologies that will have the greatest impact on how businesses operate in 2021. And with big data and analytics maturing, some also expected technologies that had gone quiet for a while, such as blockchain and wearables, to resurface.
We asked IT leaders and industry analysts for their thoughts on the technologies with the most disruptive potential in 2021, and some spoke about technologies that will come into the spotlight as the pandemic settles down.

Jason Shepherd, VP of ecosystem at Zededa, said that although corporate interest in blockchain has declined for several reasons, it is resurfacing among stakeholders as an alternative that can solve the problem of trust around data and applications. According to the State of the CIO survey, 24% of IT leaders expect disruptive potential from blockchain in 2021.
As homework enterprise blockchain still has to do, Shepherd raised concerns about "fear of exposure, the compute power public chains require, and the absence of clear standards — the fact that blockchains such as Ethereum, Hyperledger, and IOTA can only track smart contracts, not the quality of the data itself."
Even so, Shepherd believes that a fabric of trust makes it possible to raise confidence in the data delivered across multiple systems.
Industry efforts include the Linux Foundation's Trust over IP initiative, and the new Alvarium project will also make it easier to move trustworthy data from devices to applications
