340,000 users in about two months of full operation
Jeju Safe Code, the blockchain-based tourism quarantine system ICONLOOP runs in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, has passed 340,000 users roughly two months after going into full operation.
Jeju Safe Code was jointly developed by ICONLOOP and Jeju Province under a public-private partnership agreement. The goal was to build a sustainable tourism quarantine system tailored to tourist destinations — one that anticipates the gaps in disease control and the difficulty of tracing contacts that can arise from Jeju's particular circumstances, with heavy inflows of outside visitors and high visit rates at crowded places. ICONLOOP and Jeju Province piloted the system last August, centered on public institutions and businesses near the Jeju Provincial Government complex, and moved into full operation at the end of the year.
Just past the two-month mark since full operation began, more than 40,000 businesses on the island are using Jeju Safe Code, and the number of users has topped 340,000. Total uses have reached 2 million. Usage is especially high at ordinary restaurants, cafés and similar venues — places not classified as high-risk facilities but visited by large numbers of people — which is why the system is credited with doing a great deal to strengthen the island's everyday disease control framework. :)
Why did Jeju Safe Code spread so quickly in such a short time? The biggest reasons are surely how easy it is to use, and the interest and participation of residents and tourists alike. Unlike the conventional approach of generating a QR code on the user's own phone, Jeju Safe Code lets you check in quickly and easily just by photographing a QR code posted at the venue. The Jeju Safe Code app requires no sign-up at all, and business owners can use it simply by putting up a printed QR code — no separate terminal, no app to install. Convenient, and very little burden.
Another strength of the system is that blockchain technology makes visitor information impossible to forge or alter. When you use Jeju Safe Code, your identity information and visit records are encrypted and stored in a distributed manner, and this check-in data is used only for epidemiological investigations of confirmed cases.
ICONLOOP keeps advancing Jeju Safe Code with feature updates aimed at making it easier to use. The Jeju Safe Code app now lets users check their own check-in history directly, and it also carries GPS functionality, which more definitively prevents falsification of movement records. Going forward, ICONLOOP plans to keep shipping feature updates that improve the experience for users, supporting an ever more solid everyday disease control framework.
Jeju Safe Code seems to be settling in as a service that plenty of tourists and Jeju residents find easy and simple to use. Jeju Safe Code can also be used through Zzeung, ICONLOOP's DID identity verification app. Photograph the QR code posted at a venue with the camera inside the Zzeung app, and a Jeju Safe Code is issued on the basis of your DID and stored on your phone — letting you check in when you visit a business without exposing any personal information.
