New York City in the United States will issue blockchain-based COVID-19 vaccination certificates. According to CoinDesk, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a pilot run of "Excelsior Pass," an app built on IBM's blockchain technology that can verify whether someone has been vaccinated against COVID-19. Excelsior Pass stores health information — including COVID-19 test results and vaccination status — in a digital wallet on the user's smartphone, and lets the user share that information when needed. It is first slated to be issued at the vaccination centers at New York's Barclays Center and Madison Square Garden. Media coverage noted that Excelsior Pass "is designed much like a mobile airline boarding pass," suggesting that ordinary people should find it familiar enough to use in daily life. Meanwhile, Korea is also working toward issuing blockchain-based COVID-19 vaccination certificates within the year.
