Where DID technology is headed, and what it looks like once it arrives.

We came across a good piece on the direction and long-term blueprint for DID, widely regarded as a core security infrastructure of the future, and we are sharing part of it here. It is a column published in Boannews by Jae-Cheol Ryou, president of the Korea Institute of Information Security and Cryptology (KIISC) and professor in the School of Computer Science and Engineering at Chungnam National University. The day is approaching when you will have to present a digital health pass before boarding a plane or entering a restaurant. Alongside identity documents such as passports and resident registration cards, carrying credentials that show you meet some condition is becoming an everyday matter. The technology that makes this possible is DID (Decentralized IDentity).

Self-sovereign identity means being able to manage your own identity documents and credentials on your own terms. Say a mobile driver's license has been issued to you: you keep it on your phone and present it when it is needed, and at that moment you can present only the attributes that are actually required. A mobile driver's license holds attributes such as address, name, resident registration number and license number — but to prove that you are an adult, you can present only the resident registration number and leave your address, name and other attributes hidden. This is considered an important characteristic from the standpoint of protecting privacy through minimal disclosure. Add the cryptographic technique known as zero-knowledge proof and you can prove you are an adult without presenting the resident registration number at all, which is why NIST, the U.S. standards body, has recently begun preparing standardization work in this area.

As DID technology emerges as a core future technology, the government is showing strong resolve on the "nurturing the non-face-to-face industry" front of the Digital New Deal. That resolve is expected to play out in three broad forms.

1. The first is issuing existing plastic IDs as mobile IDs that work online and offline at the same time. The mobile driver's license and the mobile public servant ID are examples of this.

2. The second is issuing credentials such as graduation certificates, degree certificates and licenses of various kinds.

3. Once these technologies become widespread, the last step is issuing a new kind of mobile ID suited to the digital age. This means establishing a new digital citizen ID standard capable of replacing the current resident registration card and distributing it to the entire population — consolidating the IDs and credentials issued in the first and second stages, and adding attributes appropriate to the digital age.
